The City of Hutto, in partnership with Hutto ISD, a “call for art” to Hutto ISD students in March 2021. The City sought art and design ideas for the large hippo statues in front of City Hall and in Innovation Business Park. As the “Hippo Capital of Texas,” the City of Hutto wanted to celebrate the artistic talents of local students.

“We were excited to partner with the City on this initiative as a way to engage both our students and teachers in art,” said Amber Kingsley, Hutto ISD Fine Arts Coordinator. “We identified two themes, ‘What I love about Hutto’ and ‘Hutto- Where imagination becomes innovation’ to inspire our students’ designs. We enjoyed reviewing the submissions and look forward to eventually showcasing two winners on the City’s hippos.”

The call for artwork ended on March 12, followed by a community vote on the public's favorite designs through March 19. Hutto ISD teachers will execute the winning designs with help from City staff onto the hippos this spring and early summer.

“The love and appreciation for hippos is something that unites us all as a community,” said Hutto Mayor Mike Snyder. “During a time of separation and isolation, we were fortunate to come together in a safe way through creativity and imagination.”
